The Biz - November 2010

Saturday 6th November 3pm

Roehampton Methodist Church

The Biz is an all-age, interactive, creative, hands-on event for all the family. Come and enjoy the fun!

It's church like you've never experienced it before!

Our session's theme was fireworks. We were reminded that we have firework displays at this time of the year to commemorate the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 and that this plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James 1 was because of the animosity between Roman Catholics and Protestants of the Christian faith. Not the most honourable time for the Church!!

We learnt about St Catherine and how she too, because of her Christian faith, had been imprisoned, tortured and eventually killed. Originally she had been sentenced to death on the 'breaking wheel' (an instrument of torture) but legend has it that when she touched the wheel it broke, so she was beheaded. But her saintly symbol became the wheel and the Catherine Wheel has become one of the most distinctive of all fireworks.

Our activities and crafts included

  • Rocket prayers
  • Catherine Wheel spinners
  • Firework Painting
  • Chocolate Sparklers
  • What kind of Firework are you? (Try it for yourself - see below)

In our prayers we remembered that once again there are troubles in Northern Ireland, those who, throughout the world, are still being persecuted and tortured because of their Christian faith and our brothers and sisters at St Joseph's, our local Roman Catholic Church, with whom we have a wonderful relationship. We also acknowledged that if we are to see peace throughout the world then we need to start where we are and live in harmony with one another in our local community.

We concluded with a great firework display as darkness fell.
